Research shows that CSR improves long-term business performance and that consumers prefer to patronise organizations with strong histories of social responsibility. Customers and employees are speaking with their values as well as their wallets! But consumers especially are sensitive to empty promises and want brands to be committed to the planet, sustainability and other social issues.
This book argues that trust is at stake for every organization and is the reason why communications strategies must respond authentically. If you can’t be authentic about social initiatives, then don’t do it because CSR is not a publicity tool! Yet some see the relationship as nothing but a marketing trick – an organization’s blatant self-promotion. This book will define the real role of PR in CSR and what that relationship should be.
Now, more than ever, it is important for all types of businesses to have authentic Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives that are not a publicity spin.
The book contains 15 inspirational interviews with global thought leaders and entrepreneurs, including David Katz, CEO of Plastic Bank; Lois Acton, mentored by Anita Roddick, founder of the Bodyshop, Fred Huguez, who escaped the LA gang culture about the essence of sustainability, and more. These interviews within every chapter, along with the research, show there is international public support for business to do better and that CSR is driving investment.
The book has a special chapter on India, which is the first country in the world to create a CSR law in 2014. The West has a lot to learn from this country, which has CSR embedded in its DNA. India has one of the highest number of social entrepreneurs emerging and in the past decade, has witnessed considerable growth in social enterprise activities. This chapter also includes an interview with an Indian Yogi who talks about yoga, which can help create a sustainability mind-set.
This book demonstrates that CSR is the future of business and is the time for all types of business to have CSR as the lifeblood for all their customers and employees.
We are at important inflection point. Up to now many companies have attempted to greenwash their corporate credentials. Without actually systemically embracing what it actually means to be a sustainable and holistic company, with a true desire to tread lightly on the planet.
When businesses try to lead with PR for their CSR activities it is never sincere and is spin.
We will still see climate change deniers, and those trying to drag their heels. Lobbying to defend the status quo, but meanwhile, around them the world moves on. A younger generation expects more than this, and will move on if they feel there is not a true alignment between their own values and companies around them.
