Hi all, welcome back to my blog!.. Here we go again with a new book review.
This time it’s the turn of “Digital is destroying everything”. It’s a book published a couple of years ago about the impact of the digital revolution on traditional businesses. In it, the author, Andrew Edwards, describes and explains how the digital through Robots, Big Data, Algorithms has literally destroyed and changed different kind of industries such as media news, education, financial services, publishing, music, the world of professions, the Urban life and so on.
I’ve personally read this book during the 2015 even if as a digital expert, I was already, consciously, aware of these trends, changes and evolutions.
I personally think this book might be a good stuff for digital beginners. In other words, for all those people who want to easily understand how the digital has impacted the world of business in the last 20 years.
As always, from it I’ve selected for you a couple of valuable takeaways. Enjoy!
“..Digital has brought uncountable benefits to us all — from instant blood sugar readouts to teller-free banking to movies (often free or nearly free) almost anywhere at almost any time — but digital has also left us with what may be permanent underemployment, a near-total loss of privacy, and a further retreat behind the flatscreen of our choice..”

“.. There are a hundred million fingers on the keyboards now, telling us in real time about the shooting or the bombing or the wikileak or the guy who did that crazy thing you never would have expected in a tight-knit community. And it isn’t just blogs, of course. It’s Twitter and Facebook and Snapchat and WhatsApp and Higgledy — Piggledy and beyond..”

“..The democratization of news brought on by digital has created a virtual space not unlike a global hangout where everybody tells everybody everything about everything — a mashup of public and private, melody and dirge, as rich and varied as fresh tomatoes pulled wet and tasty right from the plant. Sometimes there’s a worm. And sometimes it’s not ripe. But lots of it is fresh and fulfilling..”

“..Students are only behaving in reactive mode. Shocked by sticker price and goaded toward marketability and even personal branding by an ever more choosy job market, they gravitate toward what seems most advantageous. Without retrenchment on cost and a new focus on the real value of university attendance, digital will have destroyed education..”

“.. Digital now plays a role in shaping and possibly destroying the long term visibility of even the most precious urban landscapes.
